Inlays/Onlays

Inlays and onlays are two of the most common restorations that we use to repair the loss of tooth structure due to cavities. These are pre-molded tooth fillings that are fitted into the grooves of the tooth. Depending on the extent of damage on your teeth, we will choose either inlay or onlay.

An inlay is used when the decay only affects the tooth’s grooves and does not extend beyond its cusps. When the damage is more extensive that it goes over the cusp or tip of the tooth, an onlay is then used. You don’t have to worry about feeling any pain during the treatment because you will be given a local anesthetic. Then, the decayed part is removed, and the impression is taken to craft mold for the restoration. The mold is sent to the dental laboratory where your inlay/onlay will be fabricated. In two weeks, you will return to the office so the restoration will be bonded to the tooth.

Traditionally, the materials used for inlays and onlays were gold or silver. Although they’re durable, yet, due to their less aesthetic appeal, patients were looking for alternatives. Today, you may choose tooth-colored materials such as ceramic, porcelain or composite so that inlays or onlays blend with your tooth.

Our dentist will help resolve your decay problems through the use of inlays/onlays. Visit our office or contact us at (647) 930 0068 so we can get started with your restorative treatment.
