A tooth bridge is used to close the gap and replace missing teeth. This fixed restoration is composed of the abutment teeth from each side of the gap and a prosthetic tooth in the middle. The abutment teeth serve as an anchor which holds the artificial tooth, also known as pontic, in place. Pontics can be made from either alloy, gold, porcelain or a combination of these materials.
Dental bridges offer a lot of benefits to our valued patients. They restore the patients’ smiles and their ability to chew or speak well. Bridges also help in maintaining the patients’ facial structure and properly distributing the bite’s forces while chewing. More importantly, the natural teeth no longer move or shift because of the closed gap.
There are four types of a dental bridge.
- Traditional dental bridge is the most common type wherein the abutment teeth are covered with crowns and hold the pontic in place.
- Cantilever bridge is used when there’s only one side of the gap has a natural tooth that can be affixed to the pontic.
- Maryland bridge is a kind that uses a metal framework to support the pontic. The metal framework is attached to the neighboring teeth.
- Implant-supported bridge is used when there are no natural teeth that could serve as the abutment.
